Fake calls and texts
Tricking peopleComes in through: Phone and SMS
The scam that comes by phone
A call "from the bank", a text about a pending parcel or a WhatsApp from a new number claiming to be a colleague. The goal is the same as with email: to get someone to share a code or a password, or make a payment.
Threat mapHow it happens
- 1
The contact
They call or message pretending to be the bank, tech support, a courier or someone from inside.
- 2
The pressure
There's an urgent problem: a suspicious charge, a held parcel, a boss who needs something now.
- 3
The request
They ask for the code that just arrived by text, to install an app or to make a transfer.
How to spot it
- You're asked for a verification code you just received
- An unknown number claiming to be someone you know
- Text links to "release" a parcel or "verify" an account
- You're asked to install an app so they can "help"
How to protect yourself
- Never share a verification code with anyone
- Hang up and call the official number to check
- Agree a process for urgent internal requests
- Train the team with examples of real calls and messages
If it has already happened
If you shared a code or a password, change it and check open sessions. If a payment was made, call the bank at once: the sooner, the better the chance of stopping it.
